What has to do with the fat and chicken correlation with Randy? Randy is a man who got a spurring to his leg from a rooster a few decades ago. He was a skinny teenager, eleven years old. Now he is a big man who continually tries to outsmart the body’s fat.
In her book The Secret Life of Fat, Sylvia Tara explains why Randy got himself in a situation where nobody could understand his weight changes.
In Sylvia’s book, Indian scientist made research shows a correlation between viruses found in chickens and people who are obese.
How it did happen?
Randy is from a family where everybody is slim. Unfortunately, after the accident with the rooster, Randy started to gain weight. It did not matter how much he forced himself to eat fewer pounds added up quickly. Randy was up and down between 200 and 230 pounds. He did not remember when he last time ate bread or pizza.
Can viruses make chickens fat?
In India, doctor and scientist Nikhil Dhurandhar searched for answers: can viruses cause chicken fat? His friend, a veterinarian pathologist, finds out that the virus SMAM-1 killed thousands of chickens in India. Necropsy showed that fat was deposited in the abdomen. Nikhil thought about the influence of viruses on people. Maybe a virus can make people fat.
Nikhil Dhurandhar experimented with chicken and discovered that healthy chicken infected with SMAM-1 became fat. He thought about people because he had an obesity clinic in India. After testing for antibodies to SMAM-1, Nikhil found out that 20 percent of individuals were positive for antibodies for SMAM-1.
Fat and chicken correlation
Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar moved to the USA to research the correlation between obesity and the virus. He used the virus Ad-36, which had similar qualities to SMAM-1. His team found out that from over five hundred subjects, 30 percent were positive for Ad-36. All the people were obese.
Endocrinologist Richard Atkinson consulted Randy about obesity. It is explained politely, without blaming. Randy heard about the virus Ad-36 and his correlation with a fat, fat defense mechanism and the strategies he would need to conquer it.
Randy introduced Nikhil Dhurandhar. Randy’s blood was examined. It tested positive for antibodies to Ad-36. Randy remembered the injury from the rooster and the change of weight after the accident.
It seemed that the virus Ad-36 helped him gain weight, plenty of it after a bloody cock attack.
How can a virus make us fat?
Atkinson explains three ways how it can happen:
It increases the uptake of glucose from the blood and converts it to fat.
It enhances the creation of fat molecules through fatty acid synthase, an enzyme that creates fat.
It enables the production of more fat cells to hold all the fat by committing stem cells, which can turn either bone or fat, into fat. So the fat cells that exist are getting bigger, and the body is creating more of them.
The direct correlation between Ad-36 in chickens and humans was not directly studied. Dhurandhar and Atkinson have researched many cases showing the Ad-36 contribution to obesity. Unfortunately, skepticism between colleagues still exists.
The assurance from scientist
Studies done in labs show that Ad-36 has correlations with obesity. At this time, there is no treatment for Ad-36.
However, Richard Atkinson assures that ” if you have had the virus, and predisposed for the gain of fat, what you eat and how much you exercise is still in your control. You may have to work harder at it.”
How is Randy doing now?
Randy has discipline and works hard towards his goals. His weight dropped from 350 pounds to 170. His calories are 1200-1500 per day. Randy says, ” I’m a clap-along jogger of sixty-two who, for the first time in his life, might have the courage to take his shirt off in gym class…My goal now is to get to 160 pounds and then get into a Speedo!”(Sylvia Tara, The Secret Life of Fat,114)
Randy is happy now because he understands his condition. It was miserable to stay in the dark and not know what was happening with your body.
Conclusion
As you see, fat has many secrets and many ways to make our lives miserable. The information from doctors brings clarity and explains why we can not lose fat so quickly. However, hope is real. It is doable. We can outsmart fat as Randy did. Discipline is the key to victory against fat. Fat and chicken correlation opened new paths to learning about obesity.

That was not the everyday article I read on losing weight. Its not blaming genetics, but its pretty darn close, and very real. I think this can be very helpful for people who are stuck and programs don’t seem to work for them the way they do for others. I worked in a gym for 4 years, and I will tell you that there are people that you see doing the right things, eating the right foods, have the right attitude, but don’t get the results! Makes me wonder how many of them could benefit from this understanding.

Hello here. I read about harm from chickens in the book The Conquest of Cancer written by Dr. Livingston-Wheeler with Edmond G. Addeo. I thought that if few decades chickens were full of tumors what is going now in the poultry industry? In this book, doctors mentioned the pathogenic form of the PC microbe, which Dr. Livingston contends being transmissible to the people. She mentioned medical journals where articles were published about findings on the transmissability of chicken cancer. It is no fun. If we can not find a real chicken which is grown in a farm as it was a hundred years ago with the grain, grass and plenty of space, it is better to stay away from it.
The case of Randy show correlation between these stories. What do we know about safety of chicken? It is better to be safe when sorry later.
Weight loss is not an easy task as it seems to be. Genetics, gender, age can influence our ability to shed some belly fat. What is most important that people would know what they can expect from their body. When they know the information as Randy did, it is easier to face facts and make decisions how to lose weight.
All the best, Nemira.

This is fascinating. I’m always interested in non-lifestyle obesity causes, and this one kinda takes the cake. My father has always kept a chicken coop, I’ll have to share it with him (because he and me and everyone else in the family is overweight, of course). It’s a shame there’s no known cure yet. And it’s completely true that some people just have to be extremely disciplined to make any progress at all. Anyway, thanks for the good read!

Hello, Penelope. I heard about chickens a lot negative things from doctors who worked with cancer cases. I previously liked chicken, especially with garlic but after reading books about chickens with tumors I lost my appetite. I believe that there are some really good birds in a heathy way. However, I can live without meat.
One thing is good as I mentioned in the article that doctors assure that weight can be lost and kept in check. It is difficult but doable.
All the best, Nemira.

This is very interesting! I have never heard of virus AD-36 before. But I know that there a lot of things that can affect our metabolism, weight and health.
My son is very interested in chickens and loves raising them. I will be sure to share this information with him.
Thank you for sharing what you are learning.

Hello, Evelyn. Previously I liked eat chicken and eggs but now after reading few books such as V. Livingston -Wheeler’s The Conquest of Cancer I lost my appetite. I hope that chickens which your son raises them are healthy. There are so many things that we do not pay attention.
All the best, Nemira.

wow..i really didn’t know this. From chicken virus, obesity….
It is very strange and also very sad..what we are eating….But of course, if something like this happens we have to know to deal with.
Thanks for sharing such an informative article.Maybe this explain many cases of obesity of people that actually are not eating a lot and were not fat always? How can we know if one has this problem?

Hello, Cristina. Yes, I was surprised too. I like chicken, cooked or alive. These birds serve us very well. Unfortunately, in some cases as with Randy from the book The Secret Life of Fat or when we eat chicken, produced with antibiotics and they are full of tumors, we do not get any benefits from chicken meat. Dr.Virginia Livingston-Wheeler in her book The Conquest of Cancer explained why people have so much problems. It is a harsh truth. The obesity occupied many developed countries, especially USA. People must be conscious and look for information how to be healthy again. There are plenty of smart and highly educated doctors who can explain and help with problems.
All the best, Nemira.

This really is an interesting read. So one can actually gain fat even if he/she isn’t really gluttonous. Its unfortunate its a virus, from my understanding there are no cures yet for such. This make me believe that such level of discipline is can be quite a challenge. Won’t you run the risk of undernourishment?
By the way, how is this virus contracted into the human body?
Cheers 🙂

Hello here. Yes, I was surprised too when I heard conversation on the PBS between host and doctor Sylvia Tara. I bought her bought and read as detective story. It seems that when rooster harmed Randy’s leg, the blood showed up. Virus from roosters leg through blood came into Randy’s body. I know that it is terrible news but SYlvia Tara gave facts where virus was extracted from fatty chicken.
Doctor Virginia Livingston Wheeler in her book The Conquest of Cancer mentioned bacterias which are responsible for cancer. She mentioned that chicken meat is full of tumors. It was thirty years ago. Do you think that something changed for good? I would like to believe but in Dr. Carolyn Deans book The Death by Modern Medicine facts tell different stories.
There are plenty if food without chickens. If you use organic chicken meat, it is a different deal. Chickens from factories are prone to illnesses. You know these stories how they are fed and kept tightly without ability to move.
Seeds, nuts, grains, organic meat and fish, fruits and vegetables are good for us. The information is a king, a right one. You are responsible for your health, not everybody else.
All the brst, Nemira

Hello Nemira,
Many thanks for the timely and informative write up. I had always had preference for chicken and fish and as such I will have to take time to did deep on the subject (fat and chicken correlation)
Your pictorial illustration also very well fits the material.
I applaud you. Good work and wishing you all the best.

Hello here, I am glad that you found the information interesting for you.I read about negativeness of chicken in the few books. Some of the doctors mentioned that chicken can be the reason why people got some chronic diseases. Dr. Virginia Livingston in her book The Conquest of Cancer emphasizes the importance of diet. She does not recommend to eat chicken at all for her patients and people who got this disease. In my blog, the encounter with chicken did not bring any good too.
All the best, be healthy and wealthy, Nemira.

Very enlightening. I have always wondered about the correlation between eating what we think is healthy and good for us and what is actually in these so-called “healthy” foods. I grew up in north Louisiana and we always raised chickens. But the food they consumed was natural. Food like corn that we grew ourselves (non GMO) or bugs they scoured the ground for. What are the effects of the food chickens eat today have on us as consumers? And maybe the long term effect doesn’t show up for years later.
Nemira says
Hello, Max. You are 100% and more right because we do not know what kind of consequences will be after eating processed foods after few years. Of course there plenty of obese people around with chronic diseases. However, water can be contaminated, plants can contain chemicals such as Roundup. Chickens as yours do not bring so much damage as chicken grown in factories.
We need to be conscious about themselves and surroundings and think clearly. Of course if we want to be healthy.
All the best, Nemira
