I use spirulina in my smoothies. You can only use a tiny bit, otherwise your smoothie tastes a bit fishy. I remember reading something about spirulina being used to help children around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. They gave the children 1 tsp of spirulina a day and found that the levels of radioactive metals in their bodies was dropping. Might be something to look more into 🙂

Hello Andrea, you are right. Scientists from Japan found out that Spirulina reduced toxicity in kidneys from mercury and chemical drugs. These experiments were done in lab with rats. Phycocyanin, natural pigment in algae, is prone to help remove toxins. People use Spirulina for fasting. During this time, body rids from unwanted waste.

After reading this, you’ve laid out a lot of the benefits and it really does sound like a super food, so I’d been keen to test it out for sure and add it to my regimen!

Hello here. I gathered this information through few books. Some books are published earlier, some of them are brand new, published year ago. It means that knowledge is fresh and based on newest research. I believe that there are more great foods but Spirulina is special because the Nature created in this way. It contains all vital nutrients. I am addicted to Spirulina because I take tablets as candies . Sometimes it saves me from overeating chocolate. I know that it is my wrong habit. Someday I will be free from it.
All the best, be healthy and wealthy, Nemira

I am always looking at ways to improve my health and I’ve heard Spirulina mentioned a few times, without really knowing what it is or what its benefits are. I can see why it is is classified as a superfood, is this something I could spring on my porridge each morning for breakfast for example? How much does it cost?
Nemira says
Hello, Steve. Yes, Spirulina is a special algae which stands out from others such as Chlorella. You can spread Spirulina on porridge but the taste is specific. I would prefer to add it to smoothies as powder or chew it as tablets. Powder has more strong taste and people are not so excited about. When you add to smoothies Spirulina, the taste disappear but benefits last till you consume the drink.
Tablets slowly melt in your mouth but taste is different, a gentle one. It reminds my dry mushrooms.
The cost is different but you can find on amazon plenty good deals. I like NowFoods brand, organic Spirulina. Once I bought five hundred tablets for $13.99. It is like nothing compare with benefits what this miraculous algae brings to your body.
If flamingos can eat it and look so gracious and skinny why we humans can not supplement our diet with nutraceutical food Spirulina?
clems says
Wow, Spirulina again.
I first heard about the benefits of spirulina when I was reading an article about the Chernobyl nuclear accident and ever since then I have been looking towards trying it out myself, and now that I have much more information about its other benefits I might just have to take it.
A quick question here is there any set of people that should not take spirulina or anyone can take it regardless of his/her health condition?
Nemira says
Hello, Clems. Everybody can take Spirulina because this supplement does not have any side effects. One philosopher from Japan, Tonu Matsui lived on Spirulina 15 years. Nothing more, just Spirulina. Spirulina detoxifies, replenishes and provides the body all needed nutrients.
All the best, Nemira.
