Spirulina and Nutrition

October 6, 2016 By Nemira 22 Comments

Spirulina and nutrition have close relationships. Why? Proper nutrition is the key to wellness, growth, development,  and joy. Spirulina is a 21-century food. These blue-green algae contain vital enzymes, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids.

According to the book Spirulina in Human Nutrition and Health, Spirulina is a high nutraceutical phenomenon.

You Would Ask What it Is Nutraceutical?

Nutraceutical means food that has suitable additives and healing abilities. It implies that Spirulina is an excellent choice for those who want to be healthy and in good shape.

Spirulina consists of proteins, balanced fatty acids, vitamins,  and minerals. Spirulina is food that helps tackle diabetes, anemia, cancer, arthritis, and more health problems.

 Spirulina and Nutrition

According to Wikipedia, nutrition is a science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food for an organism’s maintenance, growth, reproduction, health, and disease.

Spirulina is easily digestible food and rich in nutrients. For example,  one tablespoon a day can relieve iron anemia. Iron anemia is a common mineral deficiency.

When soil is depleted,  animals, and birds, the source of food for humans, are fed up with the substance lacking nutrients and full of chemicals; humans do not get enough nutrients from food.  Spirulina is an excellent source of essentials for growth and development for people.

The Role of Fatty Acids

Spirulina is rich in fatty acids. Fatty acids are the source of fuel. No fuel, no ride. The human body does not produce essential body acids. We must get fatty acids from food.

Two fatty acids are vital for humans: an omega-3 fatty acid( alpha-linolenic) and omega-6 fatty acid( linoleic acid).

Primarily fatty acids serve multiple functions in the human body.

Fatty acids play a significant role in treating depression, inflammation, and metabolic processes.

In the book,  Spirulina in Human Nutrition and Health authors emphasize the antimicrobial activity of Spirulina. Linolenic and linoleic acids have therapeutic value in cardiovascular diseases, menstrual disorders, skin diseases, hypercholesterolemia, and other disorders.

The human body produces GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) from linoleic acid (omega -6 fatty acid). GLA is found in primrose oil, edible hemp seeds,  and spirulina. GLA ( gamma-linolenic acid) plays a role in antimicrobial activity.

Vitamins

Spirulina supplies are rich in vitamin A, B-complex, beta C, D, and E.

Beta-carotene or provitamin A

Vitamin A helps maintain mucous membranes and pigments necessary for good vision.

According to Robert Hendrikson, author of Earth Food Spirulina, carotene reduces the risks of cancers. Environmental issues and poor nutrition can be triggers for cancer. Beta carotene can reduce risks.

B-complex vitamins

Spirulina contains more B-vitamins than beef liver, sea vegetables, or chlorella.

Minerals

Spirulina contains iron, a mineral that is vital for human bodies. Without iron, anemia can occur. People who suffer from anemia experience dizziness, ringing in the ears, lack of stamina, and loss of color in the face. There are heart palpitations and shortness of breath.

Iron is part of hemoglobin, a protein molecule in red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues and organs of the human body.

When anemia occurs, the oxygen level decreases, and people become tired quickly.

Spirulina is a great iron supplement because the absorption percentage of iron is 60% higher than other iron supplements such as iron sulfate.

Spirulina contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, copper,  and chromium.

Chlorophyll

Spirulina contains significant amounts of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is known as a cleansing agent. Chlorophyll can bind toxic metals and help the liver to rid of them.

Chlorophyll has the effect of curing inflammation of the mucous membranes. Gastritis and gastric ulcers are eased with the support of Spirulina.

Enzymes

Enzymes are biochemical catalysts. They influence the reaction in the body, such as quenching free radicals. As you know, free radicals increase metals’ aging and corrosion. Free radicals damage cells and proteins in the body.

It means that Spirulina contains enzymes that prevent the body from being damaged by free radicals.

Conclusion

Spirulina is a stable source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and enzymes. Spirulina is easily digested, without side effects nutritious supplement. The correlation between Spirulina and nutrition is enormous.

Spirulina is a healthy nutraceutical food and a reliable supply of vital nutrients.

Hi, I like what you wrote. I’m a huge fan of Spirulina and sea vegetables. You have some great information in here that is super helpful for people who don’t know anything about Spirulina. I’m glad you’re putting up this info because it’s such a great addition to anyone’s diet. Do you have any scientific evidence to support some of these facts? Anyway, thanks for posting.

    All the Best,

    Devon

Hello, Devon, yes, everything what I wrote here is research from books. These books are written by doctors and scientists. I prefer facts over fiction.

One of the best books published just one year ago is Spirulina in Human Nutrition and Health. It is written by the team of doctors which completed research in labs and with patients . They recorded all benefits of Spirulina. It is a first book about Spirulina which supports and provides facts that Spirulina is a nutraceutical food. It heals and improves ones well-being.

I read Christopher Hills books about Spirulina. He was one of first people who together with doctors from Japan published books about Spirulina. Robert Henrikson is author of books about Spirulina too

All blogs and pages are based on facts. Usually I cite the source from where I got information.

It would be interesting to hear your experience about the usage of Spirulina. How long do you use and what kind of form do you preffer to consumeSpirulina?

      All the best, Nemira.

I had heard of the use of Spirulina as supplements before but didn’t have an idea how it could benefit to our health. Thank you for putting this info out here. I always keep a good collection of essential vitamin supplement with me; I use it along with fitness workout and focus more on internal fitness. I especially liked the benefit it has for inflammation of mucous membrane it is something which keeps bothering me on and off and detoxifying liver which is imperative. Thank you for introducing Spirulina in details.

Where do you buy Spirulina? I’ve never heard of it. How do you consume it? Is it a pill, drink, food? I’ve been researching Kombucha is it something like that? It sounds really interesting? How does it takes? Is it fishy like omega pills? I see that it contains a lot of fatty acids so I would assume so.

Hello here. I buy Spirulina at Amazon. I pick an organic brand and in tablets form. I like to chew them. I so used to the Spirulina that for me it work as candy. I want to consume less of sweets and it works for me.

Spirulina is algae, nothing to do with fish. I know that fish oil is good for us but I do not like it as taste is not pleasant. Spirulina is nutraceutical food. It means that Spirulina has therapeutical abilities such as strengthening the immune system, replenishing the body with vital nutrients. Spirulina was on the wave forty years ago but somehow people forgot about it. There are plenty of options what to choose but some options as the fast food can bring unpleasant consequences. Obesity, chronic illnesses are the common thing nowadays.

Kombucha is a fermented drink and does not have anything in common with Spirulina. It helps with digestion and gut flora but it does not have nutritional value as Spirulina does.

Hello here, I am glad that you found the information helpful. According to comments here, many of people did not heard about Spirulina. Individuals who feel well do not look for additional supplements. Unfortunately not everybody is fortunate enough to buy organic food and skip processed foods. Spirulina helps detoxify body, replenishes it with vital nutrients and fights against free radicals.

I’ll be honest I’ve never heard of spirulina before. However, it sounds like it has amazing health benefits. Thanks for some of the education on the vitamins and minerals too. I actually didn’t know chlorophyll binds to toxic metals in the body in order to help get rid of them. Is spirulina a supplement that you can buy somewhere? Thanks again for the information!

Hi, Jeremy. Plenty of people did not hear about Spirulina. Humans are so busy with daily tasks that they forgot to take care of themselves. What I like Spirulina that this nutraceutical food gives energy and strength for me, but it does not add any pounds.

It seems like a great nutrient to take. I’ve actually never heard of this before and anything that can combat against cancer is okay with me! Does this come in a powder? i would love to put it in some of my smoothies to take on the go? It seems like that it could be pretty versatile.

Hello, Liz, thanks for the comment. You can add Spirulina to smoothies, use for the mask for the face, use pills or tablets. Everything works smoothly. Some of people do not like slightly metallic taste. However, you can mix with fruits such as pineapple, orange and banana. I chew every day tablets because the absorbttion of food starts in the mouth. Now I am so addicted that after water with apple cider vinegar I take the bottle with ReMag dissolved in water and Spirulina tablets.

Spirulina is used hundreds years ago. Mayans, Aztecs and people in Africa ate Spirulina all time. Spirulina is safe food, without side effects.

You can try and see how it works for you. If you do not like taste, you always can stop using it. Maybe your body does not need nutrients when you eat organic food.

      All the best, Nemira

Hello here. Maybe you will try one day and would be surprised with great qualities of Spirulina. High nutritional value, low calorie intake, the absence of side effects puts Spirulina between valuable nutraceutical food supplements. The scientist from Japan lived fifteen years consuming just Spirulina. He worked, participated in activities. It is not miracle . It is a reality, just people are unaware of miracles surrounding them. It is a miracle from nature because it gives all nutrients to prosper and fluorish for the human body.

      All the best, Nemira.

I have heard of Spirulina before but had no idea regarding its potent delivery of good additives and healing abilities through vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and enzymes. The nutritional value certainly attracted my attention.

You mention spirulina is a blue-green algae: Is it found in world-wide waters or more common towards the warmer climates?

Sounds like a perfect addition for a healthy diet to accompany plenty of exercise as this is key to me, working your body to digest to its full potential.
    Thanks for your spirulina information,
    Simon.

Hello, Simon. Spirulina resides on the Earth millions years already just plenty of us do not know about this miraculous algae. Originally you can find Spirulina growing in lakes of Africa, Mexico. Spirulina was consumed by Aztecs and Mayans before Spanish conquistadors came to the South America.

Spirulina can fluorish in warm temperatures and in alkaline waters. Spirulina fluorishes in lakes because other algae can not survive in alkaline conditions. The bacteria level in alkaline water is low. People who live in Africa by the lake Chad still harvest Spirulina from water, dry it and sell blue- green cakes in the markets of Ndjemena in Chad.

Many authors such as Christopher Hills, Robert Henrikson wrote in their books that Spirulina can help solve world’s hunger problems. I wonder why people responsible for important decisions do not take actions. It is easy to grow Spirulina in pounds of factories. Spirulina is checked for safety and nutrition. This algae is safe and nutritious food supplement which may help to enrich diets and support people who can not buy food for themselves in the time of conflicts or disasters.

Hello here. Thanks for mentioning this doctor. I will check about him out because I never heard about him. And United Nations? Great because Spirulina is a savior from hunger. It can be grown easily and kept for the time when something occurs such as conflict when people starve. It is great to hear from people who are interested in the same things and can give some ideas about favorite things.

Cordyceps is a natural antibiotic. I found results from Russian doctors about successful results. I tried myself many time and thanks to the gifts of nature, I deal with cold and inflammation perfectly. Emperors in a China consumed Cordyceps Sinensis. I am glad that people who need some help can buy Cordyceps now.

Thank you for these awesome information about Spirulina! I’ve read some articles about it but I have yet to try it. I’ve been taking this powdered green drink with Chlorella and some nutrition experts says that Spirulina is another power food that can be added to our daily supplements. Thanks so much for this detailed info!

Hello here. Thanks for the comment. Chlorella is good but Spirulina is better digested because this blue -green algae has thin membrane. The iron and protein contet in Spirulina is slightly higher. When I studied the book Spirulina in Human Nutrition and Health, I was fascinated with enormous abilities of this miraculous algae. Now I constantly brag about it because it is so goood:)
